Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable serum derived from the botulinum toxin that temporarily paralyzes your subdermal muscles. It’s been approved by the FDA for cosmetic treatments since 2002 and is one of the most popular and commonly requested cosmetic treatments today.
Botox relaxes your subdermal muscles that pull your skin forming wrinkles and folds. When you’re young, you have high levels of elastin and collagen in your skin that allow your skin to bounce back to a smooth appearance when you make a facial expression. However, as you get older, your body produces less collagen and elastin, so your skin gets stuck in wrinkles that form when you smile or frown.
What issues does Botox treat?
In addition to utilizing Botox for its cosmetic purposes, the dental team at Warner Plaza Dental Group uses Botox injections to treat other issues like TMJ disorders and migraines.
Cosmetic concerns
Botox injections reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your forehead, around your eyes, and the sides of your nose. However, marrionette and nasolabial line can be corrected by injecting with fillers
Migraines
If you have migraines that are caused by tension in the muscles on your face or neck, Botox injections can be used to relax those muscles and reduce your headaches. For example, if you live with bruxism and frequently clench your jaw or grind your teeth, you may create muscle tension that leads to severe headaches. Botox can stop you from unconsciously clenching your jaw.
TMJ
If you have a TMJ disorder, your chewing muscles become swollen and fatigued, leading to painful symptoms and headaches. Botox injections can relax those muscles, allowing your jaw to relax and providing you with relief.
Masseter hypertrophy
If you have masseter hypertrophy, a muscle imbalance that causes your face to become asymmetrical, Botox can relax your facial muscles to restore your appearance.
What should I expect during a Botox treatment?
Botox treatments usually last around 20 minutes and aren’t painful. To ensure your comfort, your dentist will use a topical anesthetic and will then inject the area with a very thin needle.
